WHO Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology

Worldwide, only approximately 10% of those requiring AT have access to it, while rates of abandonement of AT can be as high as 70%. These shocking figures are largely due to ineffective policies around AT provision, procurement, training and a lack of user centered practice. In 2013, the World Health Organisation established a programe called GATE to increase access to and awareness and affordability of Assistive Techology in line with the CRPD. GATE stands for Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology and is composed of  donor agencies, professionals and their organistions, researchers, industry and  consumers and advocacy organisations from around the world.

GATE is currently developing a Model List of Priority Assistive Products (APL) to inform member states when planning policies and programmes around AT research and provision.
